ISSUE BIN
If there is a problem, let’s solve it together! An issue bin is a tool that is used to improve the culture within the classroom. Children need to feel that their learning environment is shared with people who are Safe, Respectful, and Responsible. When an issue bin is created in a classroom, students are encouraged to write down concerns that arise. Educators teach the difference between tattling and an issue that interferes with learning. People can identify themselves or anonymously write down concerns. Issues bins are placed in an accessible spot in the room and concerns are addressed regularly with the group.
The purpose of an issue bin is for students to work cooperatively to discover reasonable solutions to problems. By focusing on learning and what can be done to rectify situations, students’ feelings are acknowledged and alternative actions are presented and learned.
At Primrose Hill School, educators present issue bins in different ways. In some early grades, an issue bin is placed next to a stuffed animal to encourage children to participate. In other classrooms, they are colorfully decorated with the issues and solutions are displayed. After oral discussions, some classroom teachers take notes in a composition book. The issues and the agreed upon solutions are written down. The notebook is accessible to refer back to if the situation occurs again. An issue bin is a valuable tool for classroom use because it helps to develop problem solving skills, the ability to make appropriate choices, culture, and a community of learners who work together.
