LEARNING TARGETS WRITTEN AS
“I CAN” STATEMENTS

Picture

With the implementation of Common Core Standards, there are specific skills or learning targets that are required for students to master at each grade level and in each subject area.  These provide a framework for what is taught within a classroom.
“I Can” Statements are created from the Common Core Standards and learning targets.  They are written in language that is simple, clear, and understandable to students. Teachers often place a target on the “I Can” Statements so children know the standards they are working on. They are posted and visible in the classroom for children to read and refer to.
When “I Can” Statements are introduced before particular lessons, the goal of teaching and learning is specified.  Children can identify and explain exactly what is expected of them, so they become more accountable and responsible students.
